The Calgary Sun is reporting that the Calgary Stampeders have committed to signing John Hufnagel as their new head coach. A source close to the situation told the Sun that Hufnagel has already agreed to a six-year deal worth close to $2.5 million - making him the highest paid coach in the CFL.
Hufnagel, a former Stampeders quarterback and offensive co-ordinator, would earn approximately $400,000 annually, as well as be given a financial stake in the club.
Team owner Ted Hellard would not confirm the rumour, telling the Calgary Sun that "We as an organization are focusing on the playoff game and wish the media would do so as well."
The Stampeders will travel to Regina this Sunday to take on the Roughrider's in the West Semifinal. In regards to how talk of a coaching change might affect the team, current Stamps' head coach Tom Higgins responded "It's a distraction. I'm not sure why anyone would be talking about me when we have a football game to play."
The report states that Higgins would be offered a front office job, and George Cortez, a friend of Hufnagel, would remain as offensive co-ordinator.
